Company news: Emblation Limited Achieves ISO13485 and ISO90001 Certification
Emblation limited, a global leader in the development of next generation microwave systems for industrial, scientific and medical applications, is pleased to announce that the company has earned the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) 13485 certification including CMDCAS (Canadian) requirements, in addition to the 9001 certifications.
The review was completed by SGS of Geneva Switzerland, one of the largest and most respected ISO registrants in the world. To achieve these standards represents both a commitment to the medical industry and recognition of the company's efforts to strive for the highest levels of performance and quality.
Emblation Limited is now certified to the ISO13485 requirements for the design and manufacture of microwave medical ablation products, for the design and manufacture of Microwave Systems and Microwave Applicators and to the ISO9001 standard for the design and manufacture of microwave medical ablation products, OEM, generators for medical/academic research and commercial non-medical products.
The ISO13485 certification requires that an organisation demonstrates its ability to provide medical devices and related services that consistently meet customer requirements and regulatory requirements through a comprehensive quality management system. The standard has been developed in order to create consistent medical device requirements for quality management systems on a global scale.
ISO9001 is an industry standard designed to ensure organisations consistently demonstrate an ability to meet the needs of the customer and the applicable statutory and regulatory requirements and enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of a quality management system. Whereas ISO13485 applies to the medical industry, ISO9001 is designed to be applicable to all organisations, regardless of type, size and product provided.
Eamon McErlean, Director of Technical and Quality, stated, 'The prestigious ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 certifications represent a significant milestone in the development of the company's management system, laying a solid foundation for the future growth of the business whilst providing new opportunities for customers seeking quality microwave medical products.'
Emblation's certificates can be viewed here: ISO13485 - design and manufacture of Microwave Systems and Microwave Applicators; ISO13485 - design and manufacture of microwave medical ablation products; ISO9001 - design and manufacture medical ablation products, OEM, generators for medical/academic research and commercial non-medical products.

Company news: Interview with Eamon McErlean - EEWeb
Emblation's CTO Eamon McErlean speaks to EEWeb about his experiences as an engineer, co-founding Emblation and our latest product (due for release late Summer 2012) - Swift.
How / why did you and Gary Beale decide to start Emblation Limited?
After we had both worked together as Research Associates and for the same start-up medical company we decided to found our own business based upon our expertise in using microwaves in medical applications. At that time the market for high frequency medical devices was immature and although the treatments were good the systems built to supply them were bulky and expensive which limited their potential uptake. At the time the power output and relatively low cost of the recently introduced microwave Gallium Nitride transistor technology meant this technology could replace magnetron technology used to power these treatments. We saw this as an opportunity and quickly founded Emblation with one of our first goals to create the smallest possible medical grade, high power, solid state generator system which resulted in the MSYS245 generator.
What is the hardest/trickiest bug you have ever fixed?
Probably designing our system to work with mismatched loads. Typically in microwave applications you strive to match everything to a 50 Ohm impedance reference however connecting these typical microwave components to non-optimal terminations such as those in medical applications can have interesting effects, this often results in misleading readings which could be potentially hazardous. After considerable effort we solved this problem resulting in our Safesweep® technology which provides very accurate readings of reflected power in microwave generators for mismatched loads up to 3dB.
As the CTO, what are your main objective and goals at Emblation Limited?
In addition to assisting with product development and design I am responsible for the ISO 13485 quality management system that supports all our procedures and documentation. My main objective is to deliver CE marking of our Swift product prior to commercial roll out.
Can you tell us about Swift?
Swift is a surface based microwave treatment intended for the coagulation of soft tissue. Swift is designed to replace caustic agents such as salicylic acid or phenol and cryotherapy such as liquid nitrogen all of which have useage and storage restrictions. The premise of Swift is to offer a simple modular system with compact microwave generator, cabling, hand piece and applicator. After use only the applicator tip is discarded which lowers the cost considerably to the end user. To find out more visit www.treatwithswift.com
What direction do you see your business heading in the next few years?
We are very excited as the technology for microwave based medical treatments has matured, physicians are aware of the benefits of microwave technology in being able to precisely target unwanted tissue quickly and effectively and all of the measurement reliability issues relating to using microwaves have been addressed by our Safesweep® technology.
